Just a reminder to sign up and tune in to this Friday's webcast- February 27, 2009 10AM PST. Register here for BIM with Civil 3D hosted by Lucy Kuhns.
Webcast Summary: AutoCAD Civil 3D is Autodesk's powerful building information modeling software for civil engineers that ensures all design data and annotation have predictable relationships with the other elements in your design. These design elements are intelligent-- automatically reacting to changes in related objects.
We could debate all day and night about semantics, but this is how I see things. I see the word "building" as a verb. We're building stuff. Our drawings are not just drawings any more. They are smart as heck. We have pipes that know how big they are, surfaces that can show us all kinds of analysis, we can get quantities and volumes and all kinds of amazing information from what a few years ago was just a collection of lines, arcs, and text.
There was a discussion on the groups about it a few months ago. In that discussion I quoted The 3D-4D Modeling document from the US General Services Administration (emphasis mine):
"Critical to successful integration of computer models into project coordination, simulation, and optimization is the inclusion of information—the “I” in BIM—to generate feedback. As a shared knowledge resource, BIM can serve as a reliable basis for decision making and reduce the need for re-gathering or re-formatting information."
Nobody can argue that we can all benefit from a little bit of that. Call it whatever you want, but its relevant to our business.
