During the summer, Panorama stays busy doing things she doesn’t have a chance to do during the school year. So far, she’s gone to soccer camp, art camp and a camp where she made a purse out of an old pair of jeans. Next week, she learns to kayak and draw cartoons. It’s a hard life.
Prospector also took a break from his regular schedule at the particle accelerator and tried some art lessons.
I can’t go to summer camp, but I do like trying new things. I’ve been kicking around an idea for a children’s early chapter book for a few years. It is difficult finding books for strong readers in kindergarten through third grade. There are some excellent series of course, but a lot of the books either feature characters with horrible behavior, or subject matter that is too mature. I would ask myself- why can’t there be books about kids having a simple adventure? Using creative problem solving?
I had an unexpected vacation this spring, so I started writing a little story. The story is about two kids who live on a little farm near a small town. Their rabbits need a new house and they need to figure out what to do. My goal is that it gives kids a taste of project management, brainstorming and creative problem solving. Maybe some calculus. Or at least statistics and structural engineering.
It turned into a junior chapter book for kids in kindergarten through third grade. It might be terrible. There are definitely still grammatical errors. But I wanted to share anyway, because you may have kids that can tell me how to make it a better story as I work on the final edits.
The draft of the book is available as a free pdf download. You should be able to read it on your eReader, iPad, etc. Download Darcy and Dylan Get Hopping by Dana Probert
After you or your kids read the story, I’d love your feedback. I’ve set up a survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/darcyandylan
